365 Songs: Happy New Year – Abba

Yesterday my new piano arrived – the Roland RD-700GX and I’ve been playing it pretty much non-stop since. As we entered the new year I was thinking back ten years to the Millennium and to the fact that at the time I was playing much more regularly – on New Year’s Day 2000 I was playing in the Marine Highland Hotel in Troon, entertaining the guests at lunchtime.

This year one of my resolutions is to get back into my music and make a bit more time for it, and I’ve decided to challenge myself to posting a song each day of 2010. I’ll just be playing the piano so no need to worry about my singing! I don’t intend these to be perfect performances – I just really want to make a point of recording some stuff because it’s so long since I’ve done so. I’ve no idea if I’ll be able to keep this up to date, but I’ll try my best.

Today I’ve decided to stick to something topical, so here’s a performance of Abba’s Happy New Year. If you’re interested, here’s a bit of history about this song.

    Really enjoyed that! Brings back soooo many memories Mark. You are such a talented pianist (amongst other things!) I am so glad you have decided to get back in to your music again. I was shocked to hear that day in the summer when we were at your house that you hadn’t played in so long. Well done on your new years resolution – long may it continue x

    This is GREAT, Mark! ¡Qué maravillosa!
    Congrats on the new piano and GOOD LUCK keeping up with such a commitment and don’t worry if you slip a bit. You play great. You’re one of the most interesting personalities in cyberspace – language, music, a cool accent and connecting with people from all over the world and encouraging language-learning!

    Hi Mark
    I just discovered your 365-day challenge and am inspired listening to your music, but I have a question. I realized in the short time since I subscribed to CBF, that I am a great audio learner, and perhaps it is for this reason that I continue to struggle w/my piano (have been taking lessons for 6 years, and although I do practice daily, I suck to be blunt); it seems to take too long for the notes my eyes see to fire into my brain and to my fingers and to the keys; I only get good after months (literally), of practicing the same song. Do you have any suggestions that would be helpful for me. My desire is to be able to take a piece of sheet music and play it; nothing over the top, just something beautiful, without struggling so. I appreciate any feedback you may be able to provide.

    Hi Mark;
    Im so captivated by the Abba songs you play. I would very much like to burn a CD of your songs with your permission for my personal listening pleasure. If you like I could even design for you your very own CD sleeve cover :) Hope to hear from you. Once again well done.
