239/365 Songs: The Fields of Athenry

365songs-augustAlthough I got back from Ireland last night I’m still in a bit of an Irish mood so I thought I’d play this song today. It’s a beautiful song in the 1970s by Pete St. John, set during the famine of the 1840s, and tells the tale of Michael, a fictional man from Athenry in County Galway, who has been sentenced to transportation to Botany Bay in Australia because he stole food to feed his starving family. The song has become an anthem for Irish sports fans since the 90s when it was adopted by the supporters of the Republic of Ireland football team in the World Cup.
