The piano part to the song is notoriously difficult to play, so I ended up doing a few takes of this and decided to do a full backing track with strings, kit and bass. And then I decided to sing it too, although I’ve included the instrumental version here too, which is perhaps more in keeping with the rest of the tracks in my collection! My favourite version of the song is Nat King Cole’s and that’s what I’ve based my version on. We danced to this song at our wedding and it brings back many happy memories!

The version I’m most familiar with is Dean Martin’s, but among the trivia tidbits about today’s song is the fact that it was the 25,000,000th song downloaded on iTunes! I decided to play one of my favourite songs tonight, the Sinatra classic You make me feel so young. Written in 1946, the song has also been recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, Rosemary Clooney and Mel Tomé, among other performers. Hope you enjoy it.

This song was actually named as #2 in the American Film Institute’s list of top movie songs – 100 years … 100 songs. I’m sure a few more of these songs will find their way into my playlist for the year! I hadn’t realised this until I read about the song, but it seems that the verse of this song was never included in the film, and most recordings since then have also left it out. I’ve always played it with the verse, so I hope you enjoy this rarity! If you’d like to sing along, the verse lyrics are below…

This day and age we’re living in
Gives cause for apprehension
With speed and new invention
And things like fourth dimension.

Yet we get a trifle weary
with Mr Einstein’s theory
So we must get down to earth at times
Relax, relieve the tension.

And no matter what the progress
or what may yet be proved,
The simple facts of life are such
they cannot be removed.

You must remember this,
a kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh.
The fundamental things apply,
as time goes by…

<itunes:summary>(http://www.markpentleton.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/365songs-feb1-150x150.jpg)It's day 50 on 365songs and today's performance is the classic 1942 song As time goes by from the film Casablanca. It was actually first written in 1931 and featured in the musical Everybody's Welcome, but was made famous when it was performed by Sam in Casablanca. This song was actually named as #2 in the American Film Institute's list of top movie songs - 100 years ... 100 songs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFI%27s_100_Years..._100_Songs). I'm sure a few more of these songs will find their way into my playlist for the year! I hadn't realised this until I read about the song, but it seems that the verse of this song was never included in the film, and most recordings since then have also left it out. I've always played it with the verse, so I hope you enjoy this rarity! If you'd like to sing along, the verse lyrics are below...

This day and age we're living in
Gives cause for apprehension
With speed and new invention
And things like fourth dimension.

Yet we get a trifle weary
with Mr Einstein's theory
So we must get down to earth at times
Relax, relieve the tension.

And no matter what the progress
or what may yet be proved,
The simple facts of life are such
they cannot be removed.

You must remember this,
a kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh.
The fundamental things apply,
as time goes by... </itunes:summary>

The last time I played this song was around 1am in the bar at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow following the first day of the Scottish Learning Festival and I was joined by Derek Robertson from LTS who sang the song to the delight of those still in the bar. See the video here. I thought that since BETT starts today I should include this song in my 365 list, so this song is dedicated to everyone who is at BETT over the next few days. Come along to stand K16 and say hello if you’re there!

I recorded it yesterday – my piano isn’t quite that portable! – so I’m glad I made it to London and was able to post it today.

I’ve always loved this song. It dates from 1940 and has been performed by many artists ranging from Vera Lynn to Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Rod Stewart. It was also apparently featured in an episode of Torchwood! I hope you enjoy today’s interpretation!
