Originally a French song, Comme d’habitude, by Claude François, the English lyrics were written by Paul Anka after he heard the French version while on holiday in the south of France. Anka wrote the song for Frank Sinatra and it was recorded on 30 December 1968, almost 42 years ago today. It has been used in many situations to mark the end of something – former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder requested it at his military send-off as Angelika Merkel was inaugurated, and it’s apparently the most requested song at funerals in the UK! With my friend and colleague Pierre-Benoît Hériaud (who joined me in La Corrida earlier in the year) we wrote a French and Spanish version to mark the end of the PiE project for our final Film Festival back in 2007. I’m now using it to mark the end (almost!) of my daily song project. Just two more to go – perhaps a bit predictable, but I couldn’t finish the project without including them! Today’s song is also dedicated to my nephew Ciarán whose birthday I missed in October. Apparently Ciarán likes a bit of Sinatra, just like his dad!

It's actually been quite a nice day here in Dundalk, Ireland, where I'm working for Apple on the K20 Roadshow, but I'm not sure if the weather at home was quite as nice. I hope therefore that September in the rain was an appropriate choice for today's song! It dates from 1937 and has been covered by many artists from the Beatles to Norah Jones and, of course, Frank Sinatra in 1960.</itunes:summary>

I missed Frank and Johanna’s wedding anniversary in August, so I asked them what they’d like me to play for them and this is what they came up with. Both sides now was written by Joni Mitchell in 1968 and featured on her 1969 Clouds album, although it was first recorded by Judy Collins a year earlier. It has been covered by many of the world’s greatest performers and was included in the soundtrack to the film Love Actually. The thing I like best about the song – other than the lyrics – is that the pedal bass stays on the tonic G flat pretty much throughout the entire song. And G flat is my favourite key!

So, Frank and Johanna, I have fond memories of perfect breakfasts in warm summer sunshine watching the squirrels in your back garden, so I hope that you enjoy tomorrow’s musical accompaniment.

The song is the only one in the history of the UK charts to make the top ten on three separate occasions: in 1964 (#1), 1969 (#10) and again in 1990 (#3).

For many years my Italian grandmother would reminisce about the sad events which happened on 10th June 1940 when Churchill infamously gave the order, “Collar the lot!”, referring to Germans and Italians living in the UK. My gran’s family owned Pieroni’s cafe in Irvine and it was business as usual until the day on which Mussolini declared war on Britain and France. Some regular customers became enemies overnight and looted the café. Of course, real friends supported my gran’s family, many coming to visit to demonstrate their solidarity. Nonetheless, it was a difficult time for Italians throughout Scotland and the rest of the UK: even though they had no allegiance to Mussolini, Italian men between the ages of 14 and 75 were interned, many of whom died when a ship deporting them to Canada was torpedoed.

It seemed only appropriate to play something Italian in memory of my gran and her brother and sisters who lived through these sad events. Rather than play something poignant, however, I’ve decided to choose a song which my gran always loved. The song Luna Caprese wasn’t released until twenty years later, but it has always been a favourite in our family. I hope I’ve done it justice.
