As I’m at the Scottish Learning Festival today and tomorrow I was planning ahead a bit yesterday and recorded Autumn Leaves in advance of today. Looking out the window this morning I think September in the Rain may have made more sense… Autumn Leaves, or rather the French original Les Feuilles Mortes dates from 1945. The song was actually written by Joseph Kosma with lyrics by French poet Jacques Prévert. Johnny Mercer wrote an English version in 1947.

Based on the French song La Mer by Charles Trenet, this song was recorded in 1959 by crooner Bobby Darin. I’d like to dedicate the song to my wife Catriona who celebrates her birthday today. It’s always been one of her favourite songs, and I hope she likes this version! Happy birthday, Catriona!

This song always reminds me of the year I spent in France in 1991-92. Although it dates from 1977 originally, it’s one of those French classics which was always played on the radio, and it was only when I was living in France that I discovered Cabrel.
