I then thought that these special recordings may interest some of you who are following the 365 songs project, so I’ve made an online version of the CD available and have created a fundraising page on JustGiving.com – click here to make a donation and access the songs. The CD includes You raise me up, Make me a channel of your peace, On eagles’ wings and From a distance, along with 12 other hymns and inspirational songs.

The song From a distance was written by American singer-songwriter Julie Gold and was first made famous by Nanci Griffith in 1987. It has since been recorded by Bette Midler and Sir Cliff Richard.

Today’s song is The Wind Beneath My Wings. It was first recorded by Roger Whittaker in 1982 and but was made famous by Bette Midler in 1989 in the film Beaches. Not really my kind of film, but the song is nice! And must be played in G flat!

This song dates from 1935 and I’ve always enjoyed playing it. Written by Harry Link, Holt Marvell and Jack Strachley, the song has been covered by lots of performers including Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, and Bryan Ferry, but I think my favourite has always been Ella Fitzgerald’s version.
I hope you enjoy today’s performance!

The musical is based on the novels of Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg which tell of a Swedish family’s migration to America in the 19th century.

The musical was premiered in Malmö in 1995 and received a 10-minute standing ovation. Since then it’s been staged in Gothenburg, Stockholm and in Minneapolis. Last year an English version was staged in Carnegie Hall and a this version will be performed in the Royal Albert Hall on 14 April this year. Unfortunately I won’t be there (I’ll be Apple Teacher Instituting in Cheltenham…) but the English-language soundtrack apparently comes out a couple of days before the concert.

The song Guldet Blev till Sand (”The gold turned into sand”) is taken from the second act of the show. The family has moved to the New World and the character Robert has set out in search for gold with his friend Arvid. They end up lost in the desert and after drinking poisoned water, Arvid dies. Robert returns and explains to his sister-in-law Kristina what has happened. There’s a version on YouTube with English subtitles sung by Peter Jöback if you’re interested.

I better think of something a bit cheerier for tomorrow!

Yesterday my new piano arrived – the Roland RD-700GX and I’ve been playing it pretty much non-stop since. As we entered the new year I was thinking back ten years to the Millennium and to the fact that at the time I was playing much more regularly – on New Year’s Day 2000 I was playing in the Marine Highland Hotel in Troon, entertaining the guests at lunchtime.

This year one of my resolutions is to get back into my music and make a bit more time for it, and I’ve decided to challenge myself to posting a song each day of 2010. I’ll just be playing the piano so no need to worry about my singing! I don’t intend these to be perfect performances – I just really want to make a point of recording some stuff because it’s so long since I’ve done so. I’ve no idea if I’ll be able to keep this up to date, but I’ll try my best.

Today I’ve decided to stick to something topical, so here’s a performance of Abba’s Happy New Year. If you’re interested, here’s a bit of history about this song.
